Why is college important for a career in fashion?
The fashion industry is unique. It is a combination of art and business. Where can you master these two areas? In college! For example, textiles, sketching, and patternmaking are classes you would take at a college that has a fashion program (not all colleges teach these subjects). Management, language and technology are other significant areas used in today’s global fashion industry which can be learned in college.

What is the difference between a community college and a public university?
Community colleges grant associate degrees (Associate of Arts – A.A., Associate of Science – A.S.) after completing a program’s requirements. Public and private colleges/universities grant bachelor degrees (Bachelor of Arts – B.A., Bachelor of Science – B.S.) after completing a program’s requirements.

How much is the tuition at these colleges?
Community colleges have a fee of $46 per unit. California State University fees are approximately $7000 per year for 6.1 units or more. One class is usually four units. Private colleges and universities tuition and fees start at approximately $35,000 per year. Don’t forget to include expenses for campus fees (health fees, I.D. card), books and supplies.

I would like to know if there are scholarships specific to Latinas interested in fashion

    Hello Alexis!

Thank you for your question. Latina Fashionista gave a couple of scholarships in 2012/13. One award went to a Latina college student who was majoring in fashion and the second award went to a Latina high school student who was accepted to a college with the intent to study fashion. We hope to raise funds in 2015 to offer scholarships once again.

I have not seen any specific Latina and fashion scholarships other than ours. That makes us special!

Take a look at these websites for scholarships for Hispanic students:
    *Hispanic Scholarship Fund http://hsf.net/en/scholarships/
    *Scholarships.com https://www.scholarships.com/financial-aid/college-scholarships/scholarships-by-type/minority-scholarships/hispanic-scholarships/
    *HACU http://www.hacu.net/hacu/scholarship_resource_list.asp

Are you in high school or currently in college? Which colleges are you interested in attending?

Keep in touch! Have a sunny Sunday!

hi! well I was currently surfing the web for fashion scholarships and I came upon this one and I was literally overjoyed that this ACTUALLY exists!! A scholarship for Latinas who aspire to study fashion, that is truly amazing! I am a current junior in high school graduating in the year 2016 and it is my one and only dream to become a fashion designer/ stylist, it is what I love more than anything and plan on going very far in the fashion industry. I beg you, pleeease, offer this scholarship again!! It’d be a suuuch a blessing. Thankyou so much, have a lovely day :-)
